How to choose a cushion cut diamond?

A cushion cut diamond is a diamond that has a square or rectangular shape with rounded corners. This shape is labelled as "fancy".

Cushion cut diamonds are quite popular. Those that are well-cut and well-proportioned have great brilliance and fire.

Cushion cut diamonds are often used as center stones for engagement rings and diamond rings.

Many renowned jewelers propose rings that are set with cushion cut diamonds. This diamond is a classic and should feature on every ring catalog. Many celebrities chose a cushion cut diamond for their engagement ring, such as Ivanka Trump who picked a 6 carat cushion cut diamond for the engagement ring that Jared Kushner bought her. Very often, jewelers add a pave setting to enhance the diamond even more.

Thanks to their rounded corners, cushion cut diamonds are less fragile than princess cut diamonds, which have sharp corners. Cushion cut diamonds are therefore less prone to damage.

Cushion cut diamonds have an open table; therefore you should not pick one with a clarity grade below SI1. Otherwise, inclusions might be visible to the naked eye.

Between a cushion cut diamond and a round brilliant cut diamond that have the same weight, it is the former that will be the cheapest.

It is best that you choose a cushion cut diamond that weighs 0.50 carat or more. Indeed, a cushion cut diamond with a carat weight less than 0.50 will be too small, making it difficult to see the distinctive cushion shape of this diamond. Such diamonds will look more like round brilliant cut diamonds.

We recommend that you choose a color grade included between D and H for cushion cut diamonds. A F or G color cushion cut diamond is often a very good choice.

A cushion cut diamond that is pleasing to the eye and well-proportioned should have a Leng ÷ Width ratio included between 1.00 and 1.20. This ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the diamond by its width. You can find among our secondary filters a "Leng ÷ Width ratio" filter so as to select cushion cut diamonds with the desired ratio. The closer to 1 the ratio is , the squarer the diamond is. Conversely, the greater the ratio is (>1), the more rectangular the diamond will look. There is no particular recommendation when it comes to choosing between a square and a rectangular cushion cut diamond. Often, choosing one over the other will depend on the setting used and/or your personal taste.

The major gemological laboratories do not indicate the cut quality for fancy-cut diamonds (princess, radiant, oval, etc.) Grading reports only include cut quality for round brilliant cut diamonds, making it more difficult to know the cut quality of cushion cut diamonds. However, we made the choice of indicating the cut quality for our princess cut diamonds. Drawing from our knowledge and experience, we have designed an algorithm capable of evaluating the cut quality of each of our cushion cut diamonds. This way, choosing your gemstone will prove much easier as you will only need to use our secondary filters above to select a cut quality included between "Excellent" and "Good".

Cushion cut diamonds that have a rectangular shape (with a +/- 1.10 ratio) vary a lot depending on their weight and proportions because this diamond shape is not standardized. As an example, here are some possible dimensions:
