How to choose a heart cut diamond?

A heart cut diamond is a diamond that has a heart shape. Its shape is labelled as "fantasy".

Heart cut diamonds are quite popular, and particularly appreciated for their symbolic geometric shape; the heart is a timeless symbol of love!

Heart cut diamonds can be recognized easily thanks to their special geometric shape. They are often set on rings and pendants.

It is best that you choose a heart cut diamond with a weight greater than or equal to 0.5 carat. Those with a carat weight less than 0.5 will be too small and their heart shape will be less evident.

There are less heart cut diamonds on the market than round brilliant cut diamonds. Their rarity makes them a unique choice.

Heart cut diamonds are much cheaper than other shapes, such as round brilliant cut diamonds. Usually, they are 15 to 20% cheaper than round brilliant cut diamonds.

Heart cut diamonds are often used for pendants or as the center stone of an engagement ring. Some celebrities, such as Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga, chose to get a heart cut diamond on their engagement rings.

We recommend that you purchase a heart cut diamond with a clarity grade included between FL and SI2. Be careful about some SI2 diamonds whose tables present big dark inclusions; these could be visible to the naked eye. You should also be mindful of diamonds labelled as "milky stones", which are not completely transparent.

A heart cut diamond that is pleasing to the eye and well-proportioned should have a Leng ÷ Width ratio included between 0.85 and 1.10. This ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the diamond by its width. You can find among our secondary filters a "Leng ÷ Width ratio" filter so as to select heart cut diamonds with the desired ratio. The closer to 1 the ratio is, the more ideal the proportions of the heart cut diamond are.

It is more difficult to appreciate the cut quality (i.e. proportions) of a heart cut diamond than that of a round brilliant cut diamond. This is because not all gemological laboratories specify the cut quality for fancy-cut diamonds (princess, pear, oval, etc.) Usually, grading reports only include cut quality for round brilliant cut diamonds. Besides, there is no consensus among professionals on what the ideal proportions for heart cut diamonds are, owing to the fact that this shape is not standardized. That being said, we chose to indicate on our diamond exchange the cut quality of our heart cut diamonds. Drawing from our knowledge and experience, we have designed an algorithm capable of evaluating the cut quality of each of our heart cut diamonds. This way, choosing your gemstone will prove much easier as you will only need to use our secondary filters above to select a cut quality included between "Excellent" and "Good".

The dimensions of a heart cut diamond vary according to its weight because this kind of shape is not standardized. As an example, here are some possible dimensions:

It is recommended that you choose a four-prong setting for engagement rings, solitaires, and pendants that are set with heart cut diamonds. The prongs will be symmetrically positioned around the diamond and a V-prong will be added to protect both the point of the diamond and the wearer.
