How to choose a diamond online?

Our diamond bourse contains thousands of GIA, HRD or IGI certified diamonds. How do you buy a diamond online?

If you want to buy a Lab Grown Diamond, you will pay it 3 to 10 times cheaper than a mined diamond. You can also purchase a Fancy Color Lab Grown Diamond, you will pay it 10 to 500 times cheaper than a mined colored diamond. Lab Created Diamond is a man-made diamond, it is a diamond that has the same properties physical, chemical and optical than mined diamond.

Here are some tips for choosing a diamond correctly:

  1. First, we suggest that you choose the shape of the diamond you wish to buy. The traditional shape is also the most popular: it is the round brilliant cut. It has a round shape and 57 facets. A round brilliant cut diamond is often shortened to "brilliant" by diamantaires. This shape is completely standardized, meaning that diamantaires perfectly know how to cut it. Other shapes (princess, oval, pear, etc.) are labelled as "fancy" and are not standardized.

  2. We then recommend that you determine the carat weight of your future diamond. A round brilliant cut diamond weighing 1 carat will be around 6.5 mm in diameter. Reminder: 1 carat = 20 grams. Two diamonds with the same weight will have different surfaces depending on their shapes.

    0.15 Weight 0.20 Weight 0.25 Weight 0.33 Weight
    Ø 3.40 mm Ø 3.80 mm Ø 4.10 mm Ø 4.40 mm
    0.40 Weight 0.50 Weight 0.65 Weight 0.75 Weight

    Ø 4.80 mm Ø 5.20 mm Ø 5.60 mm Ø 5.90 mm

    Ø 7.80 mm Ø 8.20 mm Ø 8.60 mm Ø 9.00 mm

  3. We then advise you to choose the color grade of the diamond you wish to purchase according to the color-grading scale for diamonds. If you want a white-looking diamond (colorless and without hue), you should choose a color grade included between D and H. There are no A, B, or C color grades; the scale starts from the letter D. The best diamonds have a D color (Exceptionally White+.) The difference between a D color diamond and an E color diamond is so little that even a practiced eye will have difficulty perceiving it. Diamond color grading scale
  4. We then advise you to look at clarity, having in mind the clarity scale for diamonds. You should select a clarity grade included between FL and SI2 if you do not want inclusions to be visible to the naked eye. This applies to round brilliant cut diamonds. Beware of some SI2 diamonds that are nicknamed "milky stones"; these are not completely transparent. The SI2 clarity grade is not recommended for emerald cut and princess cut diamonds because their large tables might allow for inclusions to be visible to the naked eye. For these shapes, you should choose a clarity grade greater than or equal to SI1.
  5. We then recommend that you purchase a GIA, HRD or IGI certified diamond. These three laboratories have an excellent reputation; they are reliable and are known for their impartiality when examining gemstones. The grading report that comes with every diamond can be seen as an ID card, in the sense that it is unique. Note, however, that a grading report neither guarantees that a diamond is of high quality nor that it did not undergo treatments (to enhance its color and/or clarity.) Because it is essential to know how to read a grading report, we invite you to read our guide on diamond grading reports. You can select your preferred laboratories thanks to our secondary filters further up.
  6. You can then filter the search results by opening the secondary filters (above) and selecting a specific cut quality, polish, symmetry, and fluorescence. We advise you to choose a diamond with at least a "Good" cut quality, polish, and symmetry. Also, it is best that you pick a diamond that does not exhibit fluorescence, or with a fluorescence that is labelled as "Medium". Fluorescence can only be seen under ultraviolet light. 7. For those who wish to purchase a diamond as quickly as possible, use our "Expert Opinion" option by only selecting 5 star diamonds. This will filter diamonds with a low quality or that are ill-cut. Loose Diamond: Expert Opinion
