A marquise diamond, also known as a "navette" (French word for "boat",) is a diamond with an elongated shape and pointed ends. This shape is labelled as fancy.
Marquise diamonds are not very popular.
Some say that a marquise diamond looks like a smile. In 18th century France, King Louis XV requested that a diamond be cut so as to resemble the lips of his mistress Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, also known as Madame de Pompadour.
It is rare for a marquise diamond to be set as the center stone of a diamond ring.
Due to their pointed ends, marquise diamonds are fairly fragile.
We recommend that you choose a marquise diamond with a color grade included between D and H, and a clarity grade included between IF and SI2.
A marquise diamond that is pleasing to the eye and well-proportioned should have a Leng ÷ Width ratio included between 1.75 and 2.25. This ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the diamond by its width. You can find among our secondary filters a "Leng ÷ Width ratio" filter so as to select marquise diamonds with the desired ratio.
The major gemological laboratories do not indicate the cut quality for fancy-cut diamonds (princess, heart, oval, etc.) Grading reports only include cut quality for round brilliant cut diamonds, making it more difficult to know the cut quality of marquise cut diamonds. However, we made the choice of indicating the cut quality for our princess cut diamonds. Drawing from our knowledge and experience, we have designed an algorithm capable of evaluating the cut quality of each of our marquise cut diamonds. This way, choosing your gemstone will prove much easier as you will only need to use our secondary filters above to select a cut quality included between "Excellent" and "Good".
The dimensions of a marquise cut diamond vary according to its weight because this kind of shape is not standardized. As an example, here are some possible dimensions:
The price of a marquise cut diamond is always based on the "4Cs:" Cut (shape), Carat weight, Color, and Clarity.
Because the price of diamonds is expressed in USD on the international market, you will need to change your local currency for USD. The exchange of your local currency rate fluctuates daily according to the exchange market. Consequently, the selling price of a diamond featuring in our diamond bourse may be slightly different from one day to the next depending on the exchange rate of your local currency of the moment.
The prices listed below are selling prices, not resale prices. The value of a diamond will differ depending on whether you are buying or selling. If you wish to know the value of a diamond, we recommend that you use our diamond value calculator.
