How to choose a princess cut diamond?

A princess cut diamond is a square-shaped diamond. This shape is labelled as "fancy".

Princess diamond

Princess cut diamonds are quite popular, and are often set on diamond rings.

A princess cut diamond presents excellent fire, brilliance, and sparkle thanks to its generous proportions and its large number of facets (up to 78 facets).

This diamond shape has a large table, meaning that it is best for you to pick a princess cut diamond with a clarity grade included between FL and VS2, just so that inclusions be invisible to the naked eye.

For a princess cut diamond to be pleasing to the eye, it should have a Leng ÷ Width ratio included between 1.00 and 1.03. This ratio is calculated by dividing the length of the diamond by its width. If a diamond has a ratio greater than 1.03, it will look more rectangular than square. You can find in our secondary filters a "Leng ÷ Width ratio" filter so that you can select princess cut diamonds with the desired ratio.

Many princess cut diamonds can be found on the market. Diamantaires like this shape because it is high-yielding and because less material is lost when cutting it than when cutting a round brilliant cut diamond. A diamond is said to be ‘rough’ before being cut (uncut, unpolished.) A diamantaire will have to examine it with care in order to find out how many cut diamonds he can get from it, and what shapes he should choose.

It is more difficult to appreciate the cut quality (i.e. proportions) of a princess cut diamond than that of a round brilliant cut diamond. This is because not all gemological laboratories specify the cut quality for fancy-cut diamonds (princess, pear, oval, etc.) Usually, grading reports only include cut quality for round brilliant cut diamonds. Besides, there is no consensus among professionals on what the ideal proportions for princess cut diamonds are, owing to the fact that this shape is not standardized. That being said, we chose to indicate on our diamond exchange the cut quality of our princess cut diamonds. Drawing from our knowledge and experience, we have designed an algorithm capable of evaluating the cut quality of each of our princess cut diamonds. This way, choosing your gemstone will prove much easier as you will only need to use our secondary filters above to select a cut quality included between "Excellent" and "Good".

A princess cut diamond is cheaper than a round brilliant cut diamond that has the same carat weight and quality. It can therefore be a good choice if you have a tight budget.

Princess cut diamonds tend to be slightly smaller (visually) than other shapes presenting a similar weight. This is due to their square shape.

The dimensions of a princess cut diamond vary according to its weight because this kind of shape is not standardized. As an example, here are some possible dimensions:

  • 0.20 carat princess diamond will measure 3.25 mm on each side.
  • 0.30 carat princess diamond will measure 3.75 mm on each side.
  • 0.40 carat princess diamond will measure 4.00 mm on each side.
  • 0.50 carat princess diamond will measure 4.50 mm on each side.
  • 0.60 carat princess diamond will measure 4.65 mm on each side.
  • 0.70 carat princess diamond will measure 4.80 mm on each side.
  • 0.80 carat princess diamond will measure 5.00 mm on each side.
  • 0.90 carat princess diamond will measure 5.15 mm on each side.
  • 1.00 carat princess diamond will measure 5.40 mm on each side.
  • 1.25 carat princess diamond will measure 5.70 mm on each side.
  • 1.50 carat princess diamond will measure 6.00 mm on each side.
  • 2.00 carat princess diamond will measure 6.70 mm on each side.
  • 3.00 carat princess diamond will measure 7.80 mm on each side.
  • 4.00 carat princess diamond will measure 8.70 mm on each side.

It is recommended that you choose a four-prong setting for a ring or pendant set with a princess cut diamond.

Princess cut diamonds can also be set on eternity rings. You will find a large selection of diamond eternity rings on our website.
